Nancy was born in 1812. Nancy Burch ... [1]
Residence:
1840 – Breckinridge County, Kentucky, 27 Oct 1840
Wm Tuttle is listed as the head of household on page 1 of the census. He is listed as between 30 and 39, which would appear to be correct. His wife is listed as between 20 and 29, which would also be correct. Also listed in the house is a daughter under 5 and another female between the ages of 60 and 69, which could be his mother or perhaps his mother-in-law. No other Tuttle’s or Wilson’s are listed on the same page of the census. Neighbors are the Overtons and Hanks.[2]
1850 – Kentucky, Breckinridge, District 2, 23 July 1850
Listed on page 4 of the census are William Tuttle (45), Nancy (38) and children Mary E. (12), James F. (10), Alexander (8), Charity A. (5) and Francis (1). Also with them is his mother-in-law Chloe Burch (80). Listed next on the census is the James and Nancy Burch family who presumably could be his relatives. Everyone reports his or her place of birth as Kentucky, with the exception of Chloe who reports Maryland. William is a stonemason and has reported real estate assets of $400.[3]
1860 – Kentucky, Breckinridge, District 2, Post Office Hardinsburg
Listed on page 121 of the census as the 897th family, dated 4 Sep 1860 is the Tuttle family. William (55), Nancy (47), James (19), William A. (17), Clarissa (14), Francis (11), Jane (6), Richard (4) and mother-in-law Cloe Birch (89). William is now listed as a farmer with real estate valued at $1,400 and personal assets of $1,168. Cloe is reported at blind. The James and Nancy H. Birch family are listed just before them on the census, consistent with the 1860 census.[4]
1870 – Kentucky, Breckinridge, Wheatleys, 29 Jul 1870
The 131st family in the census shows Samuel Overton (23) and Melvina Overton (22) living with William Tuttle (65), Elizabeth Tuttle (22) and William (2). William is listed as a farmer and Samuel as a cooper. Neither of them report to be able to read or write. This would appear to suggest that Francis is somewhere else during the reporting period and his father William is living with them. Also living with them must be Elizabeth’s brother Samuel and his wife Melvina. Not sure where his wife Nancy is during this reporting period. For unknown reasons, wife Nancy and children Clarissa, Jane and Richard are not found living at this location or located in the census for this year. [5]
1880 – Kentucky, Breckinridge, Cut-Off, 11 Jun 1880
On page 17 of the enumeration district 2 you find Nancy Tuttle (68) in the same dwelling as her son Richard Murray. Also living in the house is Richards’ mother-in-law Hariette Burdette. Both of the women are listed as widows. Nancy lists she was born in Kentucky and that both of her parents were born in Maryland. [6]
