Private John Burchett served with Lunenburg Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

John Burchett is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A017096.

John showed up in Lunenburg Co., Va tax list as tithe in 1783. John was listed as one of his father's will executors.

When John was drafted in 1779, he served in Captain Anthony Street's Company. Immediately after being mustered, the company was attacked by Colonel Tarleton's Horse. After a skirmish, they continued on to Petersburg where the company was attached to Colonel Broadnax's Regiment. John was drafted the second time in 1780 (and) served in Captain McCay's Company. His company was joined to Colonel Broadnax's Regiment.

In March 1784 John's land was processioned in Cumberland Parish. In 1785 John owned 100 acres on the North Meherrin River. His land laid alongside of his father Benjamin Burchett.

John and Keziah separated sometime after 1785. The 1787 census of Lunenburg listed a David Willis in John's household. In 1790 John owned a grist mill and land on both banks of Reedy Creek in Heny County, Va. John contracted a common law marriage with Sarah Cooper in 1795. That same year, he petitioned the court of Franklin Co., Va. regarding a mill he wished to build on the land he purchased from Thomas Roberts. In 1803 John purchased land in Franklin Co. from David Willis. John lived in Franklin Co. until he moved to Cumberland Co., Ky. in 1807. Clinton Co. was created from Cumberland Co. in 1837, incorporating the Burchett land. John purchased 50 acres on Indian Creek from John Cape. John received a pension of $20 per annum for his Revolutionary War Service. He had applied for his pension in 1833 on claim number S30300. John made his will in 1833. He mentions Sally who lived with him for a number of years as his wife. He bequeathed the children of his wife Keziah, who had been provided for many years ago, a tract of land on Reedy Creek in Henry Co., Va. [James Jinkins GED File] John received a pension of $20 per year starting 15 Nov 1833 when he was 73 years old for service as a private with the Virginia State Troops (Rev War). He was listed as a resident of Cumberland Co., Ky when the pension commenced.[Pension Roll of 1835, Vol III on FTM CDROM #145].
