Biography

Based on the reported ages for Benjamin Burchett in the census records of his household recorded in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 years, it appears that he was born sometime between 1769 and 1774. His 1860 listing stated he was 89 years old which means he was born about 1771.

1820[1] - oldest male in household in the age bracket of Over 45 Years [Earliest birth estimated 1765 + or - 1 depending on birth month]
1830[2] - oldest male in household in the age bracket of 50 to 60 Years [Birth estimated between 1770 and 1780 + or - 1 depending on birth month]
1840[3] - oldest male in household in the age bracket of 60 to 70 Years [Birth estimated between 1770 and 1780 + or - 1 depending on birth month]
1850 ?
1860[4] - Age recorded as 89 years
Death:
There does not appear to have been any Pike County, Kentucky wills 1839 - 1912[5] for this individual.
Since Benjamin was enumerated in the 1840 census record,[3] the tax books of Pike County, Kentucky would not be any help in determining year of death as the available records for Pike County, Kentucky are only available for the following years: 1823-1829, 1831, 1833-1836, 1854-1855, 1859-1861, 1865- 1872, 1874[6]
Although the other notes provided previously by other researchers indicate that there was an estate in Carter County, Kentucky of a Benjamin Burchett, Sr. inventoried on 1 September 1848, it is believed that this was definitely a different individual because the profiled has been found enumerated in the 1860 United States Federal Census Record.
Clyde Runyon does not record any listing for a Benjamin BURCHETT in his book, "Marriage Bonds of Pike County, Kentucky 1822 - 1865," published by author 1984 in Belfry, Kentucky. This book would indicate if Benjamin BURCHETT gave permission for any of his children to be married if it was required at the time the marriage bond was obtained.
1850 census record for this family has yet to be researched.

Other Notes

Majo Controversy: Most material on prior generations that agree with me have "the other" Benjamin Burchett as this son of Burwell (married Susannah Herron and died at Carter Caves); yet they have him on Prater Ck and Lick Br. of (Floyd) KY ca 1806--which could be correct, but our family definitely stayed in Rockcastle area. For full discourse on the Carter Co. family, see generation 6 of file: Burchett Family.doc, which claims the Carter Co. Burchetts were in Floyd Co. by 1806 (by Wm. S. Burchett, on www).
Sue Holden says that he moved 1811-16, first to Ivy Ck. (Pike), then to Johnson Co./later Martin Co. on Rockcastle Ck. ca. 1841.
1794-5 (Wythe) VA Tax (1 m 16+ each yr)
1810 (Henry) VA Tax
1837 (Floyd) KY Tax: Drury (various ppty. on John's Ck.), Armstead (Shoogun Edy), Thomas (John's Ck./Sandy River).
1844 (Johnson) KY Tax: 17 ac. Rockcastle, $100.
1854 (FLoyd) Tax: Thos. F./Thos. Jesse/drury H./William/Benjamin/John Sr/John Jr./James/Thos. Jr./Benjamin/Drury Sr./John/Drury Jr./Armistead
1860 (Floyd) KY #118; son John & Family adj. with his wife's parents (Drury & Elizabeth).
Introduction to her book, Margarette Sue (Burchett) Holden quotes Floyd Burchett, a son of Thomas Henry:
"Tom Henry Burchett was the youngest son of Bennie Burchett who was the youngest of five brothers who came from Scott County (?) Virginia to Floyd County, Kentucky around 1810.
"Bennie was married twice. His first wife was a Vaughn. They had three children, Billie, Settie and Betty. Billie married a Galloway. Settie married a Lewis. Betty married a Sellards. Bennie's second wife was a Lewis. My grandfather described her as a "full blooded Portuguese." They had nine children." (Holden, pgs. 1-3)
Children b. to Elizabeth to 1819; Kathy 1808-17; Nancy 1826-48. Problem??? Note repeat of names if you take Elizabeth and Kathy's children side by side!
This child list seems to run very late in Nancy's life!

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ben by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ben:
