Biography

John was born about 1780. He passed away in 1844. (1840 Census Tuscaloosa AL.)

Information has been found that is a cause of confusion in the parents of John Burchfield who died 20 January1844 in Tuscaloosa County Alabama. The following is my opinion and I would welcome anyone who has other ideas to post them here or E-mail me. *(1) Adam Burchfield, Burchfield-71 in Wikitree, married Lucretia Gibson, born (about 1745?) to Andrew and Mary Gibson. Mary died in Caswell county North Carolina about 1795. 1795 Will book C, page 118, inventory of goods of Mary Gibson by Joel Gibson, administrator. 119 1/2 acres. Each child to receive 19 1/4 acres, Hannah Lay(land on State Line), Richard Gibson, Lucretia Burchfield, William Gibson, Julius Gibson, Omey Hogg, James Gibson, Susannah Lay(adjoining Henry Adkinson), John Gibson, Joel Gibson. Surveyor Dan S. Farley.

*(2) State of North Carolina, Caswell County, October Sessions 1805. To the worshipful the court of Caswell now sitting, Julius Gibson and Lucretia Burchfield humbly complaining therewith unto your worships that Mary Gibson died intestate in or about the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Ninety four and was sized and possessed of a certain tract or parcel of land in Caswell County on the waters of Rutledgers and Grims creeks adjoining lands of Richard Gibson, levan Downs, Henry Attkerson and others, also said deceased left sumary children to wit; Julius Gibson, William Gibson, Richard Gibson, John Gibson, Joel Gibson, James Gibson, Hannah Lay, who intermarried with Richard lay, Omy Hogg who intermarried with William Hogg, Lucretia Burchfield, (widow and relict of ) And whereas several of the distributors lives at a considerable distance in other states, may the court direct the time and gazatte for publication before said division shall take place and that the said land may be divided agreeable to law and said Julius Gibson and Lucretia Burchfield be stated and put into possession of their respectful proportion and as in duty they will pray. Julius Gibson Lucretia Burchfield 1807 January Caswell County Deed book C, page 289, 290,and 300.

It seems to me that Lucretia Gibson who in Caswell county court in 1805, now Lucretia Burchfield, wife of Adam Burchfield, item 4 below, was described as Widow and relict in item 2 above and the clerk of court dropped that line of thought and proceeded with the object of the petition which was to grant Julius and Lucretia, siblings, their property before the actual dristribution because of the distance they lived from Caswell.

*(3) 1790 census Pendleton, S.C.: Julius Gibson living next to Adam Burchfield.

*(4) Listed: A.(dam) Burchfield pg. 140 James W. Burchfield and other applicants vs William Grant, Defendants To William Grant and his wife, one of the legal heirs and representatives of Adam Burchfield who died intestate (as it is said), You are hereby required to appear at the Court of Ordinary to be holden at Pendleton Court House for Pendleton District on the second Monday of February next A.D. 1826 to shew cause if any you can why the real estate of Adam Burchfield deceased, situate in said District on Coneross Creek, bounded by lands belonging to James W. Burchfield and Louis D. Martin as it is said, originally granted to Thomas Stephenson this part containing 100 acres more or less, should not be divided or sold, allotting to Lucretia Burchfield widow of said Adam one third thereof, and the remaining two thirds to James W. Burchfield, Wm. W.H. Thompson and the said Wm. Grant in equal parts, 25 January 1826. John Harris, Ordinary Pendleton District. Endorsed. We consent that the premises within mentioned be sold on the first Monday in March next on a credit of one Year for hald & two years for the balance of the purchase money except the costs. Wm. Grant (mark). F. W. Symmes, attorney for Applicants. On due examination and consent of the parties it is ordered and decreed that the lands described be sold by the sheriff of Pendleton District on the first Monday in March next, dated 13 Feb. 1826. Recorded 13 Feb. 1826.

*In the 1790 and 1800 Census Pendleton S.C., Adam Burchfield has two males in his household who match the ages of John Burchfield and James Wood Burchfield. James Wood Burchfield is a proven son of Adam Burchfield and Lucretia Gibson.

*In item 4 above James Wood Burchfield is suing his brother in law William Grant and Mary his wife to force a sale of a tract of land that belonged to his father Adam Burchfield and divide the proceeds three ways, 1/3 to Lucretia and 2/3 between James Wood, Nancy, wife of William W.H. Thompson, and William Grant. No mention was made of John Burchfield. John did not receive a share. It should be noted that John Burchfield was in Tuscaloosa County Alabama by 1818.

*John Burchfield born 15 December 1728, Baltimore county Maryland to Thomas Burchfield and Mary Johnson. 1771 Sep 1 - p. 4 Burchfield, John File #895(686); Grant #392, Bk. 24, pg. 16, (Bk. 22, p.30 303) Plat: Sept 1, 1771 Surveyed for John Burchfield 400 A on waters of Thicketty...Zacha Bullock...Jos. Burchfield, Wm. Marchbanks, C.B.

13 December 1773, John Burchfield and Lucretia his wife of Craven county S. C. to George Blanton of same, for 3000 lb. SC money, 400 acres on Thicketty Creek granted by North Carolina November 1771 being the land whereon Vardry McBee now lives. John Burchfield (I) (LS), Lucretia Burchfield (+) (LS). Wit: William Tate, Jessee Tate (T) John Park (I). Proved in Ninety Six district before John Tagert, J.P., by the oath of Jesse Tate, 31 October 1775. Recorded 30 Aug. 1777.

After 1777, John Burchfield born 1728 disappears. As in dead?

*Conclusion of my opinion: Is Lucretia, wife of John Burchfield born 1728, the same as Lucretia, widow and relict of Caswell court, now the wife of Adam Burchfield, brother of John born 1728. Could the reason that John Burchfield (died 1844) raised in the household of Adam and Lucretia Burchfield did not receive a share of the sale of Adam's land be because he was a son of Lucretia but not a son of Adam Burchfield. John who died in 1844 was a son of John Burchfield born 1728 in Maryland.

While the information above is fact, the conclusion is an opinion, namely mine. Gary Burchfield

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
