Biography

Robert Burdick, aka Berdick, Burdict, Burdet, Burdett, Burdette, Burditt, is thought to be the 9th child of Robert Burdick and Ruth Hubbard and was born in Newport or Westerly, Rhode Island.[1][2] However, no birth record is found and his birthdate and place are estimated.

On 4 January 1700 at New London, Connecticut, Robert married Rebecca Foster,[3][4] daughter of Thomas Foster and Susanna Parker.[1][2] Robert and Rebecca had the following children (no birth records found):

  • Robert, born c. 1701, married Susannah Clarke 1730 and had children[2]
  • Hubbard, born c. 1714, married Tacy Wells c. 1734 and had children[2]
  • Johnathan, born c. 1708, died 1791, married Judith Clarke c. 1729 and had children[2]
  • Ebenezer, died 1764, married first Elizabeth Stewart 1731 and second to Mary Dyer 1740, had children with both wives[2]
  • Joshua, died 1800, married Abigail Lanphere 1734 and had children[2]
  • Benjamin, married Elizabeth Tanner 1737 and had children[2]
  • Joseph, married Tase Clarke 1735 and had children,[2] married second to Elizabeth ______; he died after 1785[1]
  • Rebecca, married James Reynolds 1736[2]
  • Susannah, died before 1742, married William Wilcox 1728, she left one child[2]
  • Elizabeth, married Joseph Langworthy before 1729[2]

Robert and family were living in Westerly by 1710, when Robert joined the Sabbatarian Church there on 16 September. He wife joined the church on 5 July 1719 (she probably belonged to the New London Congregational Church before that date).[1][2]

2 October 1711 Robert and 33 others bought 5300 acres of land in Narragannsett.[5][6]

In 1733, Robert married second at Westerly, Rhode Island to Hannah _______ Saunders, widow of Edward Saunders.[1][2] On 23 October 1733, Robert Burdick, now husband of Hannah, executor of the estate of her late husband Edward Saunders, was asked to serve as surety on the estate of Edward Saunders.[7]

There are two Robert Burdicks listed as members of the Church of Christ in Westerly in 1740 who are most likely this Robert and his son. There are two Robert Burdicks on the 1768 church list, but this may be his son and grandson Robert.[8]

Robert's date and place of death are unknown. No will was found.

Research Notes

Dorcas Lewis as First Wife

Several genealogies (published and online) have incorrectly attributed a first wife to this Robert: Dorcas Lewis, thought by some to be the daughter of John Lewis, the emigrant.[5][9][10][11] Dorcas was not the daughter of John, as she was born after John's death. She was the daughter of John's son, Daniel Lewis. Dorcas Lewis married Robert's nephew, Robert Burdick, son of Thomas.

Burdick-16 and Burdick-992 appear to represent the same person because: These two men have the same name, birthdate, birthplace, wife, and other similarities... their death dates are different, which is a concern... and one of the profiles has several repeats of children's names... which is another concern...

Burdick-846 and Burdick-16 appear to represent the same person because: these are clearly intended to be the same person, lack of sources on one profile makes the data estimates, only
