MARY ANNE BURGER VAUGHN

Birth: Feb. 3, 1923 Death: Jul. 15, 1997

MARY ANNE VAUGHN: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice Daily Press (Newport News, VA) - July 20, 1997

NEWPORT NEWS - Mary Anne Burger Vaughn, our Mom, died Tuesday, July 15, 1997.

Mom will be remembered for her silent strength which guided us during the losses of Dad, Joseph Leo Vaughn, and just two years later, our beloved brother, Michael Patrick Vaughn.

Mom was a generous woman who would do anything for her family and friends, but would ask for nothing from them. Mom was always there when you needed her, but never seemed to be in need. Mom was a giver, not a taker; a listener, not a talker; a forgiving friend, not a judging parent.

Those who knew Mom from her days as a registered nurse will recall her dedication to the care of others, from expectant mothers to intensive care patients. After serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, where she met Dad, Mom worked in the civil service at McDonald Army Hospital on Fort Eustis. Mom's career initially included providing care to women during pregnancy, and then, years later, attending to those critically injured or ill. Yes, Mom gave at the office. She gave her knowledge; she gave her experience and she cared.

Mom will be remembered by some for her seven years at Busch Gardens. After retirement, Mom decided to work there as a cashier. It would be, in reality, another way for Mom to take care of others. Although the actions of making sure no customers were over-charged, under-changed or in need of simple things like straws and napkins may seem trivial, Mom went to great pains to handle each and every person individually. It really mattered to her that her cash drawer balanced, to the penny, and that every visitor she served was not left wanting.

Mom had a special place in her heart for each of us, her brother, the Rev. Frank Joseph Burger of Grand Junction, Mich.; her sons, Frank Joseph Vaughn of Powhatan, Patrick Leo Vaughn of Jensen Beach, Fla., and Anthony Charles Vaughn of Hampton; her daughter, Rosemary Catherine DuVal of Coral Springs, Fla.; and our spouses, her close friends, her 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Losing Mom has left a void that will never be filled. No words can describe our emptiness or express our sorrow. We miss her sympathetic ear. We miss her reassuring hug. We miss her silent strength. We miss her. We owe everything we are to her and we hope she knows how much we truly love her. "Mom, you will always be with us."

A vigil service will be conducted 7 p.m. Sunday at Peninsula Funeral Home by the Rev. Father Frank Burger. The family will receive friends following the service until 8:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday in St. Jerome's Catholic Church by the Rev. Father Frank Burger. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
