Biography

Reuben Sr was born 12 Feb 1744, the son of Edward Burgess and Margaret Fewell. Reuben Sr. married Margaret Stribling 01 Sep 1765 in Stafford, Virginia. They were the parents of eight children. Reuben Sr. passed away 12 May 1820.

Reuben Burgess is listed on Stafford Co., VA tax rolls 1783-1788, with nine whites. Listed Albemarle Co., VA tax rolls from 1789-1799. Sold his land in Albemarle Co. on Jan. 5, 1799 and moved to Rowan Co., NC (the section that became Davie Co. in 1836) later that year (his first deed there is dated 1799; it lists his residence as Albemarle Co.). Listed 1800-20 censuses for Rowan Co. NC. Died there in 1820 (will dated Sept. 18, 1817, codicil dated May 22, 1820, will probated Aug., 1820 court session). Reuben Burgess was a farmer all of his life; he was probably the last of his brothers and sisters to die.
