George was born in 1804 in Rowan, North Carolina. He was the son of Thomas Burgess and Mary Hunter. As a young child he moved with his parents and older siblings to Tennessee. In about 1823 he married Charlotte McBride. They had approx. 11 children (per census records), 7 daughters and 4 sons.
George and Charlotte remained in Putnam, TN throughout their lives. It was here he passed away in 1873. He is buried at the West Cemetery.
