Biography

William Shelby Burgin was the son of Calvin Burgin and Celia Dozier

William Shelby Burgin was born 5 January 1892 in Madison County, Kentucky. In 1900 Shelby is 8 years old and is living with his parents in Foxtown, Madison County, Kentucky. [1]

Shelby is 18 years of age in 1910 living with his parents in White Hall, Madison County, Kentucky. Shelby is still single but not attending school. No occupation at this time is listed for Shelby. [2]

Shelby is described as tall in height, light brown hair, and dark brown eyes and has a birth date of 5 January 1892 in Kentucky on his World War I Draft Registration Card. [3]

Miss Mary House and Mr. Shelby Burgin motored to Lexington Thursday afternoon and were married at the Phoenix Hotel. The bride is the attractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. House, and is very popular among her many friends. The groom is the only son of Mrs. Calvin Burgin and is a splendid young farmer. Their many friends extend congratulations. They went from Lexington to New York and other places of interest on a short wedding trip. [4]

Shelby is 28 years old in 1920 and is married to Mary (who is 21). Shelby and Mary are living with is parents and Shelby is working as a farmer. [5]

In 1930 Shelby is 38 years old and is living with his family in Foxtown, Madison County, Kentucky. Shelby is working as a farmer and lives on a farm that he owns. Shelby states that his home does not have a radio set and that the home value is $10,000. [6]

Shelby is 48 years old in 1940 and is living in Boonesboro, Madison County, Kentucky on a farm that he owns which is worth $1000. Shelby states that he has worked 20 weeks prior to the census in 1940 and that in 1939 he only worked 26 weeks (half a year). [7]

On Shelby's World War II Draft Registration Card he is described as being 5'11" tall, 195 pounds in weight, brown hair, blue eyes, and ruddy complexion. He states the next of kin as being Tom Brumfield[8]

Shelby died on 27 January 1977 in Richmond, Madison County, Kentucky. [9][10][11]
