Biography

Welby Wilson Burgin was the son of Easom Burgin and Mary Travis and was born in 1866 and died in 1952. Welby was a dentist.

In 1870 Welby Burgin is 3 years old and is living with his parents in Union Township of Madison County, Kentucky. [1]

In 1880 Welby Burgin is 13 years old living with his parents in Foxtown, Madison County, Kentucky. Welby is attending school. [2]

On 29 November 1892 Dr. Welby W. Burgin married Dovie Martin in Hamilton County, Ohio. [3]

Dovie dies in 1895 and Welby marries again in 1898 to a Bettie Edminston in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky. [4]

In 1900 Welby is 33 years old and states in the U.S. Census that he was born in August of 1866 in Kentucky. Welby is married to Elizabeth and his mother Mary is living with them in Richmond, Madison County, Kentucky. Welby's occupation is that of a dentist, and they are renting their house. [5]

In 1910 Welby is 43 years old and is living in Crab Orchard Ward 2 of Lincoln County, Kentucky. Welby lists his occupation as Tooth Duties (dentist) and he is the employer. Welby states at this time they are living on a farm that they own free and clear. [6]

In 1920 Welby is 53 years old and is living in Campbellsville, Taylor County, Kentucky on Press Avenue. Welby is a dentist still and is working for himself. [7]

1930 Welby is found in the U.S. Census living back in Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky. Welby is 63 years old and is working as the manager for Kentucky Central Power Company. Welby states in the census that his home has a value of $7500 and that there is a radio set within the home. [8]

In 1940 Welby is now 73 years old and is living with his family in Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky on Sancaster Avenue. Welby is once again working as a dentist and states that his income is $15000, and that his home has a value of $7500. [9]

Welby Wilson Burgin died on 23 November 1952 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. [10][11][12]

Dr. W. Burgin Dies Sunday in Crab Orchard

Dr. Welby Wilson Burgin died peacefully at 8:40pm. Sunday night, Nov. 23 at his home in Crab Orchard. His death ended a long tenure of practicing dentistry in different towns in Kentucky and he was still maintaining offices in Crab Orchard a month before the time of his death.

At 86 he still maintained dentistry service to people in this vicinity and was active in social and religious circles. He had devoted almost 60 years to his profession. Born in Richmond, Ky., he attended High School there, attending the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. He had practiced in Richmond, Lexington, Campbellsville, Standford and Crab Orchard.

He was a member of the Campbellsville Christian Church, a Mason, a charter member of the Elks Club in Richmond and held in high esteem in the medical profession throughout the state.

He married the former Miss Bettie Edmiston of Crab Orchard in 1898 and moved to Lincoln County in 1909.

Survivors are his wife, five daughters, Mary Lucille Burgin and Nancy Cathryn Burgin, Crab Orchard; Mrs. Cloyd Leigh Jr., Stanford; Mrs. William Pearson of Houston, Tex.; four sons, Welby and Howard Burgin, Stanford and J. Calvin and Francis E., Louisville, and four grandchildren, Bettie Hall Burgin, Stanford; Bettie Ann, Barbara Ann and Billy, Louisville.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 25 at the Crab Orchard Christian Church at 2 p.m. Name of officiating minister was not known at press time.

Morgan Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
