Biography

Early 1898, Nancy Sullivan was eighteen when she had an affair with her uncle Dennis Amze Burgin, husband of Macy Ann Dyer-Burgin, Nancy's mother's half sister. She would be seven months pregnant and was nineteen when she would run away with Dennis and got married 19 Oct 1898 in Washington Co., Arkansas. Family story is that Dennis never divorced his 1st wife Macy and Nancy's mother, Margaret A. Dyer-Sullivan and father, William I. Sullivan said that she shamed the family and never wanted to see her or Dennis ever again. Two months after Nancy & Dennis Burgin's marriage, their 1st child, Byrdie was born 17 Dec 1898 in Washington Co., Arkansas. 1900 Missouri Census list Dennis, Nancy and Byrdie living with Dennis's Parents, James C. and Delilah Burgin at Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri and the next year they would be living in the State of Louisiana. In August of 1901, Luddington, Louisiana, Dennis would leave Nancy, who was two months pregnant with their 2nd child, and go back to Macy in Douglas Co., Missouri and father his 7th child with her. Nancy's 2nd child of Dennis Burgin, Ira Vernon Burgin was born 12 Apr 1902, Luddington, Louisiana and two months later, Macy's 7th child of Dennis Burgin, William Edward Burgin was born 13 Jun 1902, Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri. Shortly after William's birth, Dennis left Macy to look for work and Macy would never see him again. Dennis would return to Nancy and together they would have three more children born in that state of Louisiana. Their 4th child, daughter Beattie, born 1905 and would die a year later. Shortly after their 5th child, Vernen Lee Burgin, born 08 Jun 1907, Dennis, Nancy and their four children would move to Kiowa, Pittsburg Co., Oklahoma. Dennis would start a business as a carpenter, home bulider and cabnit maker. People of Kiowa said Dennis was a honest person, hard worker, good husband and father to his children. On 07 Jun 1916 in Kiowa, Pittsburg Co., Oklahoma, a son Virgil Dewey Burgin, the 6th child of Nancy and Dennis Bugin was born. But in June of 1923 Dennis would suffer a stroke and loose the use of his right arm and leg, though he was able to walk. Family and friends said from this time forward Dennis was acting very strange. July 1923, Dennis had an arguement with his daughter Retha Pearl Burgin and beat her severely with his left hand. For the next few months, Dennis feared his life was in danger and thought his wife, daughter and other people wanted to kill him. It was 12 PM noon, Monday, 12 Nov 1923, Dennis hurried to the closest neighbors to tell them he was in the front yard when he heard three shots and feared his wife had committed suicide. When the neighbors got to the Burgin home, they found Nancy laying over a hand gun with two bullet holes in her head, one bullet hole in the back of her head and one bullet hole in Nancy right temple. Nancy was still alive when a doctor and the police arrived. Nancy body was place in a bed and she awoke for a brief moment to say that Dennis had shot her and lapsed back into a coma. Dennis A. Burgin was arrested and taken to the McAlester, Pittsburg County Jail. Nancy E. Burgin would died the evening of next day, around 8 PM, Tuesady, 13 Nov 1923. On Wednsday, 14 Nov 1923, the police would take Dennis to attend his Wife's Funeral and Nancy E. Burgin would be burried at the Kiowa City Cemetery. Dennis A. Burgin was committed 02 Feb 1924 to the Eastern State Hospital in Vanita, Oklahoma and claimed up to his death in 27 Mar 1929, that he never killed Nancy, that she had committed suicide or some one else had kill her. Children of Dennis and Nancy said before he had his stroke in June of 1923, that he was a loving father and husband and that is why they would have Dennis burried next to their mother, Nancy Burgin, in the Kiowa City Cemetery at Kiowa, Pittsburg Co., Oklahoma.
