Biography of John Patrick BURKE of 1823

John Patrick Burke, II was born 1823, in Ballyoughtra townland, Creagh Civil Parish, County Cork, Ireland, the third son of Patrick Burke and Catherine Leahy, and baptized 1823 near Skibbereen in the Creagh and Sullon Congregation, Diocese of Cork and Ross. His baptismal sponsors were Michael Minihane and Margaret Savage, who is probably from Ballyisland townland.

John Patrick Burke, II was the second son to bear the name John, and we believe his older brother John Burke, born 1817, had passed away young.

John Patrick Burke, II was one of several siblings:

  1. John Burke, I was born in December 1817 in or near Ballyoughtera, Creagh, County Cork, Ireland, and John Burke was baptized on December 20, 1817, near Skibbereen in the Creagh and Sullon Congregation, Diocese of Cork and Ross. His baptismal sponsors were Richard Collins and Mary Leahy. His godmother was probably a sister or cousin of his mother. John probably did not live very long, as another brother is given the same name in 1823.
  2. Darby Burke, born June 1819, and baptized June 6, 1819 near Skibbereen in the Creagh and Sullon Congregation, Diocese of Cork and Ross. His baptismal sponsors were Darby Collins and Margaret Savage. Darby Collins is probably related to Richard Collins who is the baptismal sponsor of Darby's brother John Burke. Margaret Savage is the same sponsor as Darby's older brother and is probably an aunt or cousin.
  3. John Patrick Burke, II born 1823, and baptized 1823 near Skibbereen in the Creagh and Sullon Congregation, Diocese of Cork and Ross. His baptismal sponsors were Minihane-Michael Minihane and Margaret Savage. This is the third child Margaret Savage is godmother for, and she is probably an important family member.
  4. Timothy Burke, baptized December 16, 1825, in the Diocese of Skibbereen and Rath. Baptismal sponsors were John Leahy and Cate Burke. Timothy's godfather was probably a brother or cousin of his mother, and his godmother was probably a sister or cousin of his father.
  5. Michael Burke, born September 1830 in or near Ballyoughtera, Creagh, County Cork, Ireland, and baptized September 21, 1830, in the Diocese of Skibbereen and Rath. Baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah Gearry and Honora Burke. Is this godmother the Honora Burke who married Mr. Collins from Ballylynch?
  6. Margaret Burke, born in March 1833 in or near Ballyoughtera, Creagh, County Cork, Ireland, and baptized March 24, 1833 in the Diocese of Skibbereen and Rath. Baptismal sponsors were Michael Burke and Joanna Leahy. Joanna Leahy is also the wedding sponsor for two Burke-Leahy marriages, one in 1854 and one in 1856, if this is the same Joanna Leahy.

John Patrick Burke, II was probably still alive and with a home and maybe a family of his own by the time the 1852 House Book Valuations for Ballyoughtra were taken. He was one of several Mr. Burke's listed in the valuations book, at a time when each family was expected to provide for every one of their children instead of giving all to the oldest son. John Patrick Burke, likely listed as "John Burke", would be 29 years old in 1852, and 30 years old if listed on Griffith's Valuations. He would only be 20 years old on the 1840 Valuation if he is listed at all.

John Patrick Burke, II married Margaret Unknown and they children:

  1. Daniel Burke, born about 1869, who married Bridget Cadogan after 1901 and had several children: Margaret, Patrick, John, Mary, Katie who is Kathleen "Kitty" Burke Whooley, Michae Burke, all who appear on the 1911 Census for Ballyoughtera.
  2. Margaret Burke, who is age 25 on the 1901 Census, but disappears before the 1911 Census. She may have married, moved or immigrated. More research is necessary.

John Patrick Burke, II's farm went to his son Daniel Burke about 1900 as registered in the Cancellation Tax Books for 1900.

John Patrick Burke, II passed away before 1901 because his wife Margaret is a widow on the 1901 Census of Ireland. John Patrick Burke would have been 70 years old in 1893 and 75 years old in 1898 if he was still alive. So he likely died before reaching the age of 78.

Research Notes

  1. Paddy Burke's wife Mary Driscoll Burke of Ballinard, wrote on December 6, 1991 that Daniel had an aunt who was a Burke who married a Collins from Ballylinch, This was probably John Patrick Burke's sister, but we don'lt know yet if it was Margaret who married a Collins. We are also researching for a Honora Burke Collins, but we don't know if John Patrick had a daughter Honora.

Research Notes

  1. John Patrick Burke was born about 1824 in County Cork, Ireland, possibly in Creagh Civil Parish. He is about the same age as Daniel Burke born 1817 and Randle Burke, born in the early 1800s.
  2. John Patrick Burke is probably not Patrick Burke, Jr., son of Patrick Burke, Sr. and his wife Joan Burke who was baptized on March 20, 1825 in the Diocese of Skibbereen and Rath, and whose sponsors were John Burke and Honora Foley. More research is necessary
  3. We know that John Patrick Burke is not the son of Timothy Randal Burke, because Timothy Randal had five daughters and only one son that lived until 1901. Randal Burke, born 1860. He is also not the brother of Randal, as Randall's two brothers died young. But he might be the father, brother or close cousin of Timothy Randal Burke, because his son is listed as a cousin of Randal Burke at his death in 1913.
