"During the Civil war [John] was a commissioned officer holding the rank of lieutenant in the Seventieth New York Volunteer Infantry being a member of the famous Friend Rifles. He was wounded in action at the battle of Gettysburg and never entirely recovered from his injuries dying from the effect of the wounds in Pittsburgh in 1896." [1]
