Biography

Salome Buckhart was born in 1734. She was the daughter of Johannes Buckhart and Katarina Herbert.

In 1746, Salome emigrated from Switzerland with her brothers Jehu and Nathaniel, at the age of eleven, and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Her brothers were carpenters and she worked as a maid to Mennonite farmers. Salome married Peter Burgner. Nathaniel and Jehu moved to Maryland or Virginia.[1]

Salome married Peter Burgner in 1759 in Pennsylvania.[2] Salome and Peter had four children: David (b. 1761), Elizabeth (b. 1763), Mary (b. 1766) and Jacob (b. 1769).

Salome's husband Peter died in 1784. She later married a Mr. Hersey. She later left Mr. Hersey and went to live with her son Jacob and his family. When Jacob decided to move his family to Franklin County, Salome's brothers, Nathaniel and Jehu, came from Maryland to invite her to live with them, however, Jacob would not let her go. In 1806, Salome moved with her son Jacob and his family to Franklin County. They resided there until in 1812 he decided he wanted to take his family to Ohio. Salome decided to move in with her daughter Mary in Maryland.[1]

Salome died on 22 June 1818 age the age of 83 in Maryland.[1]
