John was born in abt. 1737 in Esholt in the parish of Otley and baptised at All Saints Church, Otley on 3 Jul 1737, [1]. At various times of his life he is reported as having been a "Husbandman (1761), Church Warden (Weston - 1764), Yeoman, Farmer (1778/9/95/1809/11), Grazier (1809) and Gentleman (1809)". He died aged 72 years at Weston on 15 Jul 1809 [2][3] and was buried in the churchyard of the Church of All Saints, Weston on the 18 Jul 1809 [4].
He made his will on 22 Apr 1806, naming Samuel Smithson, a friend, & William Burnell, his son, as executors. This will was proved at York on 9 Aug 1809 - the estate being valued at <£450 [5].
