James Richard Burnett, son of Thomas Burnett and Ellen Davies.
Like his father, James worked as a Farmer settling in Paenga, Murchison as did his brother Fenton. (Paenga was given as his address at the time of his enlistment - WWI)
James served with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion. serial no 6/2562, rank Private. He embarked on the Willochra or Tofua, August 14, 1915 with the 6th Reinforcements, from Wellington bound for Eygpt. Just 4 months later James contracted Pneumonia complicated with Diphtheria. He was admitted to the 19th General Hospital in Alexandria on December 12.
James died 16 days later on December 28 age 34. He was buried at Alexandria Military and War Memorial Cemetery.[1]
