Christening 07 Nov 1821 SAINT GEORGE, DOUGLAS, ISLE OF MAN, Atholl Burnett was the son of Scots John Burnett and Penelope Hayes. [1]
Childhood
In 1826 Atholl's father was appointed the first Colonial Secretary of Van Diemen's Land. Atholl, his parents, 2 of his brothers and his 5 sisters all travelled to Hobart the same year. His eldest brother James remained in England to continue his education until 1832. Atholl grew up in Hobart (in what is now Tasmania).
Career
Atholl may have served in the military in his youth. [2]
Atholl had a business partnership with Edward Chapman (the husband of Mary Jane Burnett, who now appears almost certain to be Atholl's sister). Their company owned property in Mauritius (the Queen Victoria Estate). Following Chapman's death in 1854, there was a dispute between various mortgagors of the properties over whose took priority, with Atholl having power of attorney over Chapman's widow's and son's interests. The case went before the Privy Council in 1865 and was found in the family's favour.[3]
