Robert Burnett, Lord Crimond, was born about 1592, the son of Alexander Burnett and Katherine Gordon. He was the brother of Sir Thomas Burnett of Leys, 1st Baronet. [1] Robert was a Scottish Advocate and Judge.[2] He was so successful that he was able to purchase several estates, including Crimond in Aberdeenshire, which became his residence.
Sir Robert opposed the Covenant. This led to his leaving Scotland on three occasions, once remaining in exile for five years. On his final return, he lived in retirement on the Crimond estates until the Restoration, at which time he was made a Judge of the Court of Session, under the title of Lord Crimond. [3]
Sir Robert lived only a few months after his appointment to the Court. He married twice and had 5 sons and 2 daughters. Three of his sons died unmarried and the two others had no male descendants. The Burnetts of Crimond are extinct in the male line. Robert Burnett's youngest son was Gilbert Burnett, Bishop of Salisbury, one of the more distinguished members of the Burnett family.
