Biography

George Burnett was the only son of Thomas Burnett, Baron Kemnay, and his wife Elizabeth Brickenden, daughter of Richard Brickenden, of Inkpen, Berkshire.^[1] In his youth he was under the Tutorship of Dr. George Lament, who later became a distinguished physician in London. When his father died, in 1729, his mother married his tutor and she appears to have resided in London. George came under the Guardianship and Tutorship of Sir Alexander Burnett, of Leys.

On the death of Sir Robert Burnett of Leys, only son of Sir Alexander, a competition for the succession to the Leys estates arose between Sir Thomas Burnett and the only son of George Burnett of Kemnay.

Family

He married, firstly, aged 20 (1734), the daughter of Sir Alexander Burnett. ^[2] She died 21 September 1750.

George remarried, 25 oct 1751, to Janet Dyce, daughter of James Dyce of Disblair, who died 16 July 1802, without issue.^[3]

Both wives lie in the same grave in the Kemnay churchyard.

With his first wife he had:

• Alexander Burnett, his only son and heir.
• Helen Burnett, born 1734, died 1810. She died unmarried.
• Anne Burnett, born 1736, died unmarried 1782.
• Jane Burnett, born 1739, she married Alexander Dunbar of Boath, died in 1764 and is buried at Auldearn.
• Elizabeth Burnett, born 1738. Her date of death is not given by the historian.
• Mary Burnett, born 1747, died, unmarried, in 1802.
