Biography

John Burnett II, son of the immigrants John and Lucretia (MNU) Burnett , "was born around 1676, probably S. Farnham Parish, as his father appears in court records there during that period. A court record dated 12 Feb 1705/6 Essex Co., Va. names 'John Burnett of Essex Co., son and heir of John Burnett'".[1]

John married Amy/Amey Gatewood, the daughter of John and Amy Gatewood, before November 1706, based on her being referred to as "Amy Burnett" in her father's will.[1]

John's will "was dated 17 Sept 1717 and probated in 21 May 1717. Obviously, there was an error made when the court recorder entered the will into the book."[1] His will read:

To dear & loveing wife, Amey Burnett: negro man named Will: the use of the third part of my land & plantation during her life time.
To son John Burnett: a mulatto girl named Cate.
To son Joseph Burnett: a negro girl named Sue.
To dau Elizabeth Burnett: negro boy named Sam.
To dau Anne Burnett: negro woman named Jenney.
To dau Amey Burnett: negro girl named Moll.
Sons John & Joseph be of age at the year of sixteen & that they receive their estate then; all my land to be equally divided between them at age 16.
The rest of my estate to be divided between my loveing wife & five children.
Exec: Amey Burnett & beloved brother Thomas Burnett.
Wit: James Boughan, John Fargeson, Thomas Ralton.

10 May 1707 - Essex County, VA - Edward Eastham and Anne, his now wife, of St. Stephens Parish, King and Queen County, sell 225 acres in Essex County to William Croudus and Robert Moody. This parcel adjoined the land of Henry Pendleton, the line of Mr. John Burnett and the land of John Waggoner. Witnesses were James Alderson, Erasmus Allen, and William Thornton. Memo of possession given witnessed by John Games, Martin Nall and Argol Blackstone. [2]

John passed away about 1718.

Research Notes

June Baldwin Bork identified an additional child named Jeremiah Burnett supposedly born after John's death. There is no known reliable source for this claim and it is likely incorrect for the reasons explained in detail in this research paper. YDNA has also proven that the supposed descendants of this Jeremiah are a completely different YDNA line than testers from the Descendants of John and Lucretia Burnett surname project at FTDNA. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Jeremiah Burnett Sr bn 1718 was not the son of this couple. Jeremiah did not exist and was made up by June Bork

I hope Jeremiah was their son as he is my direct ancestor. Jeremiah to Charles to Claiborne to Chesley to James to Roy Foster Burnett, my grandfather.
There is a research paper attached that you can click on and read to see explanation and the primary source documentation. If you have questions afterward I would be happy to answer them. Can you give me the birth / death dates and places of the Claiborne Burnett you mentioned. I do not have any Chesley Burnetts in my tree. If you have a male relative with the last name of Burnett I would suggest that you have him take a y37 test at family tree dna. There are 2 completely different ydna lines combined in the earlier research. These 2 ydna lines did not have a common ancestor for 10,000 years or more.

Burnett-3121 and Burnett-344 appear to represent the same person because: These 2 are duplicates, please merge. Correct DOB is "about 1660" but "about 1673" should be noted in merged bio as a possible alternative. Please merge, I'll follow up with clean up and sourcing once the multiple merges are done.
