William Burns was born in about 1863 in County Down, Ireland.
William Burns married Edith Alma Parker in 1889. The marriage was registered in Launceston, Cornwall, England in the last quarter of the year.[1]
William and Edith had six children:
In 1891 William Burns (age 24, Soldier R A) lived at Princes Street in Devonport, Devon with his wife Edith (20).[2]
William moved back to Ireland with his family between 1898 and 1901 (daughter Mary's death was registered in England in 1898, and they were in Ireland for the 1901 census).
In 1901 William Burns (age 35, Bread Server) lived at Flax Street in Clifton Ward, Belfast, County Antrim with his wife Edith (30) and three sons: William (9, Scholar), Robert (7, Scholar), and John (3).[3]
When their son Wilfred was born in 1906 they lived at 9 Dromara St in Belfast.
In 1911 William Burns (age 45, Bread Server) lived at Farnham Street in Cromac, County Antrim with his wife Edith (40) and four sons: William George (19, Apprentice Mechanic), Robert Francis (17, Grocery), John (13, Grocery), and wilfred Augustus (4), as well as niece Mary Gordon (18, Seamstress) - William & Edith had been married 22 years and 6 children had been born alive in the marriage (4 of whom were still living).[4]
