Biography

Robert was born about 1839. He emigrated to New Zealand aboard the vessel "Victoria". The "Victoria" sailed from England on 5 December 1861 and arrived into Lyttelton on 30 March 1862. Robert was recorded on the passenger list as being aged 23. He was accompanying the family of John and Henrietta Halliday and their two children, although it is not known whether they were related in any way.

He married Jane Macfarlane in 1863 and the couple lived in Southbridge, Selwyn, Canterbury. Robert farmed for some years and was manager for Messrs White and Co. at Southbridge. He was the first chairman elected for the Southbridge Town Board.
