Samuel Burns was born about 1840[2] in Canada.[2][3] He was the son of Mary [unknown maiden name] Burns,[2] an Irish immigrant.[2]

He married Catharine "Kate" Hanlon.[2][3][4] They lived in Syracuse, Onondaga county, New York. They were recorded there in 1875[2] and 1880.[3]

Samuel and Kate had three sons:

  1. William J. Burns[2][3]
  2. Samuel J. Burns[2][3]
  3. Joseph Burns[3]

Samuel was widowed in 1919, and buried Kate at Saint Agnes Cemetery [4] in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York. On his death in 1925 he was laid to rest beside her.[4] They have matching headstones side by side.

Funeral services for Samuel Burns, former railroad builder and pioneer settler in Syracuse, who died at Crouse-Irving Hospital Wednesday, will be held at the home, 262 Tremont St., Saturday at 9 A.M. and a half hour later at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Burial will be in St. Agnus' Cemetery. Mr. Burns was born in Canada, but came to Syracuse 75 years ago. He had charge of construction work for the New York Central Railroad on it's western division for 47 years. Surviving are his two sons, Samuel J. and Joseph P. Burns; a brother, Patrick Burns, and a nephew, the Rev. James H. Burns, of Oriskany Falls.

  • Lived on 110 Fitch St Syracuse NY and was a contractor according to William J Hanlon of PA.
  • Burial: St Agnus Cemetery informed (phone call to Stu Wilson on 04 Apr 1995) that they have a Catherine Burns buried there with Samuel in Section 15a plot 29. Samuel in grave # 7. Dorothy Doyle Burns was the last person buried there widow of William Burns. Ella Burns bought the lot. Dates of burial are as the man at the cemetery gave Stu.
