Biography

Gladys was born in Pensacola, Florida on 7 February 1905[1].

1910 - Gladys was enumerated in her father's household at 420 North DeVilliers, Pensacola, Escambia, Florida[2]

1920 - Gladys was enumerated in her mother's household at 322 North Baylen, Pensacola, Escambia, Florida[3].

1930 - Gladys was enumerated in her husband's household at 915 Jackson St.,Pensacola, Escambia, Florida[4].

1940 - Gladys was enumerated in her sister-in-law's household at 1001 Gonzales St,Pensacola, Escambia, Florida [5].

Profession

In 1940, Gladys was a saleslady in a department store[5].

Marriage

On 28 November 1928, John Francis Rafferty and Gladys Louise Burns were issued a marriage license in Escambia county Florida[6] They were married on 30 November 1928 in Pensacola, Florida by Rev. Malcolm Rafferty. The witnesses were Mrs. J. C. Pfeiffer and Mr. Schmitt.

Solemn High Mass at St. Michael's Church Celebrated With Breakfast At San Carlos Following Marriage Service

A lovely wedding of Friday morning was that of Miss Gladys Louise Burns, daughter of Mrs. Louise Burns, to Mr. John Francis Rafferty, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rafferty, which took place at Saint Michael's church at a solemn High Mass at 8 o'clock.
The Mass was sung by the Rev. Malcolm J. Rafferty of Birmingham, brother of the groom. He was assisted by Rev. Father Callahan and Rev. Father Sheridan, deacon and sub-deacon, respectively. Father LeBaron also assisted in the sanctuary.
The church was beautifully decorated in chrysanthemums, ferns and palms.
Before the ceremony, Miss Ellie Baker sang "Because". The music was under the direction of Mr. E.J. Johnson.
The bride, who was given in marriage by her mother(sic), Mr. Arthur Burns, was lovely in a dress of brown charmeuse with trimming of soft cream lace beaded with small pearls, and accessories of tan. She carried a bouquet of large white chrysanthemums. She had as her only attendant, her sister, Mrs. Joseph Pfeiffer of Ravenna, Ky., whose dress was of tan silk flat crepe. Mrs. Pfeiffer carried a bouquet of yellow chrysanthemums.
The groom had as his best man, Mr. Regis B. Schmitt.
Immediately after the ceremony, the bridal party attended a wedding breakfast given at the San Carlos hotel.
The young couple left for an extensive honeymoon which will take them to Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas.
Upon their return, they will be at home to their many friends in an attractive apartment on East Hill.

Death and Burial

Gladys died on 17 October 1949 in Escambia county, Florida.[8] She was buried in St. John's cemetery.[9]

MRS. GLADYS RAFFERTY

Mrs. Gladys Burns Rafferty, 44, of 1003 East Gonzales street, died in Sacred Heart hospital Monday morning after an illness of several weeks.

Mrs. Rafferty was a lifelong resident of Pensacola and had been employed at Bon Marche for about 20 years as a clerk and buyer. She was the widow of John Rafferty.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Hilda Pfeiffer, Louisville, Ky.; two sisters-in-law, the Rev. Malcolm Rafferty, St. Andrews parish, Montgomery; and a niece and three nephews in Louisville.

Funeral services will be conducted in Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 9 a.m. Wednesday with Father Rafferty officiating. Interment will be in St. John's cemetery.

The Rosary will be said in Lloyd Fauria parlors at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Edgar Pfeiffer, Jack Elliot, Albert E. Baker, Sr., Albert E. Baker, Jr., Virgil Lea, Herrin Hatton.

Notes

She completed 4 years of high school[5]. Family tradition says that Gladys had cancer.
