Susanne "Bonne" (also spelled Bourne, Borne, Burns) was baptized 19 Apr 1772 at St Francis of Pointe Coupee in Louisiana to Catherine Jones and Jean Bonn. [2][3] Her baptism record states that she was baptized at the age of 9 months and mentions that they are English. Most other entries regarding her mother call her Catherine Lejeune At this point it is unclear to the author whether her name was Anglicized at the time of Susanne's baptism or her maiden name was adapted to the French Lejeune at other dates. A search for their marriage record is ongoing. It is believed by many that Susanne's father was from Ireland.
On May 29, 1790, Susanne reportedly married Pierre Antoine Fruge in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, LA. [4] Unfortunately this is not a reliable source and as of 21 Aug 2014, the Diocese of Lafayette has been unable to locate an actual record. [5] The couple seems to have remained in Opelousas as they were still there at the time of the 1810 Louisiana Census [6]
After Pierre dies on 25 July 1819[7], we initially could not find her on the 1820 census and assumed she was living with one of her children.
However, it appears she may have been living with a man named Arnaud Ramard. On 14 Nov 1820 she entered into an agreement with Arnaud Ramard dit Peignier, to live with him as a wife until his death, in exchange for all of his land and possessions.[8] Her family fits almost perfectly into the 7 Aug 1820 census of Ramard's household.[9]
The St. Landry Parish Clerk of Court was able to find the actual agreement of which a copy is now in the possession of D. Storz.[10] The first page which acts as a cover when folded reads:
No. 247. Ramard to Fruger: Sale of Land of 14th Nov. 1820. Recorded in Book E-1, pages 380 & 381 of the records of sale for the Parish of Saint Landry this 14th day of November 1820.
While the main page reads:
This Deed made the fourteenth day of November in the Year one thousand eight hundred and twenty between Arnaud Ramard of the State of Louisiana and Parish of Saint Landry of the one part and Susanne Burns, widow of Pierre Fruger deceased of the aforesaid State and Parish of the other part Witnessith, that for and in consideration of the premises hereinafter expressed, he the said Arnaud Ramard has bargained and sold and does by this act grant, bargain, sell, set over and convey to the said Susanne Burns a certain tract or parcel of land situated in the aforesaid Parish of Saint Landry and lying on the Prairie Facketaique having (? two? five? ten?) arpents front by forty in depth, bounded on one side by the domain, and being the same on which the said Arnaud Ramard now resides--the said Arnaud Ramard has also bargained, sold, conveyed and delivered and does hereby grant, bargain, sell, set over and delivery to the said Susanne Burns all and every other species of property of which he is possessed. To have and to hold the above described tract of land & other property of which the said Arnaud Ramard is possessed as aforesaid to the said Susanne Burns her heirs, executors, administrators and assigns-- This sale being made for an in consideration of sundry services rendered to the seller by the said Susanne Burns & in consideration that she the said Susanne is to dwell and continue with the said Arnaud Ramard as a woman with her husband during the natural life of said Arnaud Ramard. In testimony whereof the parties have hereunto signed and affixed their seals in presence of the subscribing witnesses and before George King Judge in and for the aforesaid Parish at Opelousas the day and year above written. Witnesses: James Ray, Wm. Simon. Mark X of Arnaud Ramard. Mark X of Susanne Burns widow Pre. Fruger
According to the source which first alerted us to this agreement, Ramard disappears from the records after 1821.[8] They add that it is not clear if she lived up to the agreement, since her own estate at death in 1837 did not include the property in question nor are there any transactions showing she sold the property.[8] Her succession appears to be the one listed as Mrs. Pierre Fruge and dated 6 Nov 1837.[11] Oddly the National Society of the Daughter's of the American Revolution indicate she died after this date.[12] This makes me wonder if this was the date of her will.
Also oddly, in late 1848, "Susan Burns, widow of Pierre" and Antoine Fruge's names appear on a Land Patent for 161.60 acres under the 1820: Sale-Cash Entry (3 Stat. 566), which they held as tenants in common.[13] The plat map for this land can be found here.
