Biography

John was born in 1616. [1] He came from Norton Subcourse, Norfolk, England.[2]

He emigrated to New England, where John Burrage was recorded in Charlestown, Massachusetts, on 11 September 1637: "John Burrage hath liberty to take Jno. Charles' houseplot by Goodman Blott's." The 1638 Charlestown Book of Possessions lists John Beridge as holding six parcels, including a dwelling house with a garden plot. John Burrage was admitted to the Charlestown church on 10 April 1642.[3] He became freeman in 1642.[2]

He was a ferryman by occupation. His first wife was named Mary; her last name is not recorded. In Charlestown he held the public offices of surveyor and clerk of the market.[2]

Wife Mary died and John Burrage was married again, to Joanna Stowers, daughter of Nicholas Stowers, before 1657, and probably earlier.[4] Marriage date is based on birth of child June 10 1657.

John Burrage died in Charlestown on 19 October 1685 at the reported age of 68.[5] His widow Joanna survived him.

Children

  1. Mary, "daughter of John Burrage and off Mary his wiffe," was baptized at Charlestown on 3rd month, 8th day, 1640 (i.e., 8 May 1640).[6]
  2. The birth of Hannah, daughter of John Burrage and Mary his wife, was recorded at Boston on 14° 10° 1643[7] (i.e., 10 December 1643).

Burridge-97 and Burrage-39 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth and death data. Names are variant spellings of same name. I see the Burrage spelling in cited records, so it's the better choice for LNAB.

FYI: There are more children to be added.

Burrage-112 and Burrage-39 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. Joanna Stowers was his second wife.
