John Burroughs was born around 1718 probably in Trenton (now Ewing Twp.), New Jersey. He was probably the son of John Burroughs who came from Newtown to Trenton around 1703. His mother was possibly named Elizabeth, who is sometimes named as a second wife of John Burroughs Sr.

John married Lydia Baker on 8 April 1746 by license in New Jersey stating that both bride and groom resided in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.[1] Children, recorded together in the Falls Monthly Meeting records (Quaker):[2]

  • Hannah b. 11 of 10th month 1746
  • Margaret b. 1 of 3rd month 1749
  • Eliza b. 27 of 8th month 1751
  • John b. 23 of 9th month 1753
  • Rachel b. 3 of 1st month 1757
  • Samuel b. 23 of 4th month 1759
  • Sarah b. 25 of 3rd month 1761
  • Henry b. 21 of 4th month 1765
  • Hester b. 25 of 3rd month 1767

The will of John Boroughs of Upper Makefield Township in Bucks County, yeoman, "far advanced in old age (being near eighty two)" is dated 9 May 1800 with codicil dated 15 January 1804 and was proved 8 December 1806.[3] It begins by mentioning son Samuel, eldest, who "imprudent conduct has cost me more than his proportion" and son Henry, youngest, who "by his industry and frugality has consequentially enhanced it". The will makes the bequests:

  • son Samuel, eldest, one silver dollar
  • Samuel's eldest son John Boroughs, to have one hundred pounds, and in case of his ceased then among his brothers and sisters, the surviving children of Samuel
  • son Henry, youngest, the 200 acre tract and dwelling house where John then lived; also a clock, all the plows, harrows, and gears, and some grain and livestock; Henry to contribute 12 pounds annually and otherwise how he sees fit to the support of Samuel
  • to Henry's wife, a looking glass and some furniture
  • the residue of the estate to his six daughters, to wit Hannah Thornton, Margaret Harvey, Elizabeth Taylor, Rachel Beatty, Sarah Buckman, and Esther Fell

Executors were son Henry Boroughs and son-in-law Benjamin Taylor. The 1804 codicil just increased Sarah Buckman's allotment to make her equal with her sisters.
