Lewis Burwell III was born in 1711 at Fairfield, the residence on Carter's Creek in Gloucester County of his parents, Elizabeth Carter Burwell and her first husband, Nathaniel Burwell (1680–1721).
His grandfathers were Lewis Burwell (d. 1710), a wealthy Gloucester County planter, and Robert "King" Carter, one of the wealthiest men in North America, who served as president of the governor's Council. Burwell's younger brother, Carter Burwell, who built Carter's Grove in James City County.[1]

In the Burwell history, online, it states that Lewis Burwell II was their first child, so I'm guessing the first two children had either a different father or a different mother. -Jayne Peace Pyle
