Charles was born about 1823, and this corresponds to ages given at the time of the 1891 Census, his death, and his burial.
However, earlier Census information puts his assumed birth year at 1821, 1820 or even 1819.
Charles married Ann Wickens on 4 June 1843 at St Edmund's, Wooton, Isle of Wight. At this time, Charles and Ann both give their residence as "Chillerton Farm in this Parish". Charles's father is given in the marriage register as "Henry Butcher, Brewer" and one of the witnesses is "Henry Downer".
Charles used the name "Downer" at the time of the 1871 Census, listing himself, Ann, and their son George, all with the surname "Downer". George used the name "George Downer" throughout his life.
Charles died on 2 May 1900, when his age was given as 77 years. His daughter, Louisa Butcher-Taylor was the informant of his death and she describes him as a "General Labourer"; with the cause of death given as "Disease of Heart Bronchitis".
When Charles's widow, Ann, died in 1911 she is described as "Widow of Charles Butchers (sic) a Miller's Labourer". This is how Charles's occupation is recorded at the time of the 1861 Census.
An early narrative includes information on Charles's Christening (but the father's details (Joseph) do not correspond to the information on Charles's marriage entry (Henry):
