Biography

Burrell was born in 1828. He is the son of Peyton Butcher and Elizabeth Renick.

Burrell was a Postal carrier and Mechanic. He died with at least 4 children. I am not sure that the one child was his, but know that three did carry the Butcher name. Grandma said he died shortly after her marriage in 1909. I am sure that the death date is correct. He passed away after 1900. My grandmother said she was about eight years old when she went to live with Susan Moss, who married a man named Ogletree. That would have been about 1898.

The "Gibbin-Butcher Genealogy" is not correct since Grandma was Burr's daughter, and she had two brothers. By which marriage, I am still trying to find out. In 1900, Burr was in the Upshur County Infirmery, Union District. He stated that he was 72/75 years old and was born in May of 1828, in West Virginia. He could read and write. His wife and children were not with him.

The 1910 Census shows no record of him. Frances, his wife stated she was a widow. 1900 Census, Meade District, Upshur Co., WVa., Vol.33, E.D.147, Sh21, Line 66. In 1880 Census, Harrison Co., WVa., Burr was single and living next to Eli Butcher. He was working as a Miller. He was 52 years old. I do not know what happened to his first wife, Bridget Dailey.

The Marriage Record of Burrell Butcher and Frances Jane Fassett, Upshur Co. WVa. This record is not listed in the index book at the court house. We had to search through the records to find it.

The`Gibbens-Butcher Genealogy' records Burr as dieing much earlier. The Butcher family was quite respected and wealthy, They did not want Burr to marry Fannie and may have felt that she was marring him for some of that wealth. She had a bad reputation and was too young for a man already in his 60's when he married her. The family disowned him.

Probate Records: Son and Heir, Payton Butcher, 4 Will Book 464, July Term, 1854. Wood County, W.Va.

The Butcher family came from Ireland. Burr worked in lumber camps. He badly injured a leg in a log jam. Never healed. He and his daughter, Maggie, went to the `Poor House'. Wife, Fannie, left with sons Ottis and Roy. Fannie married a Mr. Buchcannan, according to her grandaughter, Thelma Robinson Showalter. Thelma said that Fannie lived near by and that she new this was true. Thelma visited her grandmother but her mother, Maggie, would not have anything to do with Fannie because she felt her mother had abandoned her back at the poor farm. Maggie never forgave her for that.

After his injury, Burr sharpened saws to earn what money he could. He also was a mail carrier. His mail sack was given to his Grandson, Michael Burr Robinson. It is not known what happened to it after Mike died. Maggie was taken in and raised by a Mrs Ogltree, and kept house for her. Maggie always considered Mrs. Ogltree her mother and loved her dearly. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Burrell by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Burrell:

Butcher-1412 and Butcher-451 appear to represent the same person because: I'm connected to Roy Butcher & Ruby Pearl Murphy, Ruby Pearl is my grandaunt, and my information is passed down through her line, in contact with her grandchildren. I have connection on wikitree through the Burrell Butcher-451. One of his great-granddaughters Linda Moore just did a DNA on Ancestry.
