Jacob Butcher was the patriarch of the Butcher Family in the Big Sandy Valley. He was of German ancestry and had been raised in a German-speaking household, only knowing English as a second language.
With a combination of German and broken English, he once compared his first wife Hannah Beverly and second wife Arta Dotson by saying "Ter Pefferlys iss nice people but ter Teuffel (the Devil-ed) iss in ter Totsons!"
It was said that Jacob loved to eat fish and would walk to Greasy Creek or Two Mile Creek with a hook, line and pole. He would spend the day catching sundad and bluegill fish which were often prepared for dinner by Arta or their daughters.
When the ladies once expressed concern about Jacob choking on a small fish bone, he laughed and replied "I'll swaller the bones, too!"
Jacob was the paternal second great-grandfather of Maybelle Addington Carter. He was the maternal third great-grandfather of June Carter Cash and maternal fourth great-grandfather of Carlene Carter and John Carter Cash. He was also the paternal third great-grandfather of Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle.
Jacob is reportedly buried in the Meek Cemetery across from the mouth of Hurricane Fork of Greasy Creek at Boons Camp.
