Biography

Kent (historic flag)
John Butcher was born in Woolwich, Kent, England.

John William Butcher was born about 1847 in Woolwich, Kent, England.[1]

In 1851, John W. Butcher lived at 25 Burrage Place, Greenwich, Plumstead, Kent, with his parents, John and Rebecca, and 3 brothers and sisters. Father John was a journeyman joiner.[1]

John William Butcher arrived in New South Wales, Australia aboard the SS Hanover on 22 September 1854, when he was 7 years old. He was travelling with his mother Rebecca, a dressmaker, and 4 brothers and sisters. Jemima Warden, a 66 year old upholsterer, was travelling with the family.[2] They are listed on the New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists. (“Assisted immigrants” are individuals whose passages were either subsidized or paid for by another person or through another agency. The Butcher family's passage was apparently subsidized by the Family Colonization Loan Society, a benevolent society that, among other goals, helped recent immigrants bring other family members to Australia. This family paid a total of £1450 for their passage, with the Society loaning the family £752 1s 8d.)

He passed away in Feb 1920.[3]
