Biography

Jane was born about 1829. She was the daughter of Robert Butler and Susanna Johnston. [1]

She married Andrew Kerr, a schoolmaster, on 26 November 1851 in Drung parish church.[2] Her abode was given as Maghera (a frequently used abbreviation for Magherintemple) Drung, where her brother William was then living, so she must have been living with him and his family. William signed the register as a witness.

Rathmolyon, Co Meath was their home from at least 1857 to 1863, at which point her husband Andrew died, leaving her a young widow with five children. Shortly afterwards she emigrated to Australia to join her brother Richard there.

Jane died on 19 November 1915 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.[3][4]

Jane and Andrew had five known children:

  • Jemima, born about 1852, married James Parker McMeekin, died 1936
  • Robert, born about 1853, died 1917;
  • Samuel McGee, born 15 Jan 1857 in Rathmolyon, died 27 Jul 1899 in Australia;
  • Elizabeth Jane, born 9 Jun 1859 in Rathloyon,
  • Isabella born 10 May 1862 in Rathmolyon.
