Biography

Frances Ferguson Butler was born in May 1824 in Nassau, Bahamas to Robert Claxton Butler and Frances Ferguson Butler. She was baptized at Christ Church, Nassau 28 December 1824.

Frances married John Frederick Peat, a native of Germany, in the Bahama Islands. Fred and Frances Peat moved to San Francisco sometime before 1854. The couple had children John William Ferguson Peat, Thomas George Peat and Robert Henderson Peat in California.

Fred, Frances, and John William Ferguson Peat appeared in the 1860 US Federal Census. After John Frederick Peat's death in the city in 1867, Frances remained in California and raised all three of her sons there. They appeared in the 1870 and 1880 US Federal Censuses. Frances' nephew, Henderson Stanley Ferguson Adderley, eventually moved from the Bahamas and joined her in San Francisco to sell sponges.

Frances Ferguson Butler Peat died in California in 1895. "PEAT - In this city, September 29 1895, Frances Ferguson Peat, a native of Bahamas, aged 71 years, 4 months, and 29 days."
