Thomas Butler II was a Virginia colonist.

Thomas Butler II, believed to be the eldest son of Thomas Butler I and Joan (Christopher) Mount Stephen, was apparently born in England in about 1627/1628.[1]

In 1654, Thomas filed his mark for hogs and cattle in Westmoreland County, Virginia; recorded 25 Sep 1654.[2] On 16 May 1660, Sir William Berkeley, Knight, granted a patent to Thomas Butler of 60 acres in Westmoreland County, it being a point of land bounded easterly with the line of James Harris, northwardly, northwesterly, Westwardly and southwesterly with Hollowes Creeks and a small branch called Morobscoe. Recorded 15 Nov 1660, Thomas Butler to [James] Harris. All my interest in this patent. Acknowledged 15 Nov 1660.[3] On this same date, James Harris conveyed to Thomas nine acres "adjoyning unto Thomas Bulter his corne field for tenn yeares provided that Thomas Butler shall leave sufficient room for cattle and hoggs for to come to James Harris his own dwelling house."[4]

On 11 March 1662/63, "Upon proofe made to this Court that Thomas Butler hath transported into this Country fourteen persons and no land_hath beene taken up, it is ordered Thomas Butler have certificate for 700 acres. Willm. Cymber, Willm, Bayly, Ann: Williams, Jno. Vincent, John Stanes, Tho. Rollingson, Tymothy Bennett, Robt. Davidson, Willm. Butler, Mary Blackman, Am: Hansonn, Tho: Butler, Daniell Awdye[?], Tho: Francis.[5]

Thomas was granted another patent by Sir William Berkeley on 23 March 1664 for 391 acres in Westmoreland County on the south side of Appomattocks Creeke northest upon the land Mr. Thomas and James Baldridge, southeast upon the land now in possession of Mr. Daniel Lysson, northwest by a parcell of land some time in possession of Mr. Johnson and the land of Mr. Alexander Bainham, 175 acres held by a former pattent granted to Butler, 416 being added for the transportation of five persons into the Colony.

Unfortunately, there has been some confusion over the years regarding how many times Thomas Butler II was married, and to whom he was married. Based upon all available evidence, there is definite proof of two wives, Anne (Baldridge) Baynham, the widow of Alexander Baynham, and Jane, whose maiden name is not known, but who was appointed Administratrix of Thomas Butler II’s estate by the Westmoreland Court when he died in 1678.[1][7][8][9][10][11]

(NOTE: In researching the Butler family, I have come across a substantial number of individuals who claim that the Anne Baldridge who was married to (1) Alexander Baynham, and (2) Thomas Butler was the same person as the Jane (MNU) who was Thomas Butler’s wife at the time of his death. This is not correct. Proof that Alexander Baynham’s wife was named Anne and not Jane can be found in two documents.
  • (1) Barbados Records: Wills and Administrations, 1639-1680, shows: Alexander and Ann Baynham witnessing the will of Andrew Sanders. [12]
  • (2), Virginia, Colonial Abstracts, 1632-1810. ”150 acres for Alexander Baynham for importing himself, Ann his wife, Alexander Baynham.” Anne and Jane were two different wives.[13]

In addition to Joshua Butler, it is widely believed that Thomas Butler II was also the father of the John Butler who was married to Anne Baynham, and the Thomas Butler III who was married to Ann Lancelot.[14][15] If this is accurate, then It definitely appears that Thomas Butler II must have had a first wife whose identity is unknown.[1][7] Based upon the 26 Dec 1676 date of John Butler’s will, and the fact that he was married and had two children, and based upon a 1673 property lease involving Thomas Butler III and Francis Gray, both John and Thomas III had to have been born in the early 1650's, years before Thomas Butler II married Anne (Baldridge) Baynham.[1][16] In light of the above, Thomas Butler II definitely appears to have been married three times.

Although the name of Thomas Butler II’s first wife has not been determined, he is known to have married for a second time to Anne (Baldridge) Baynham, the widow of Capt. Alexander Baynham.[7][8][9][17] Anne was the daughter of James and Dorothy Baldridge, who according to Harry Wright Newman in his book The Flowering of the Maryland Palatinate, may have arrived in the Maryland colony aboard either The Ark or The Dove in 1634..[9][18] Although no record of Thomas and Anne’s actual marriage has been found, I believe it probably took place in about 1659/61 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.[19][20] This estimated date is based upon the wills of James and Dorothy Baldridge, which were dated 26 Nov 1658 and 2 Nov 1662, respectively.[21][9] Because Thomas Butler II only witnessed James Baldridge’s will in 1658, but was referred to in Dorothy’s will of 1662 as “son-in-law” with a child named Joshua Butler, I believe the estimated time frame for their marriage is fairly close. She also mentioned Alexander and Anne (Baldridge) Baynham’s three “surviving” daughters, Elizabeth, Anne, and Mary.

After their marriage, Thomas and Anne, appear to have continued to reside in Westmoreland County, Virginia. On 27 April 1664, the Westmoreland County Court awarded Thomas Butler one third of Alexander Baynham’s personal estate by virtue of having married Alexander Baynham’s widow.[22] Although Anne is believed to have later died in Westmoreland County, the actual date of her death is not known. After Anne passed away, however, Thomas apparently married again to a woman named Jane.[10] Unfortunately, neither Jane’s maiden name, nor her parentage, are known.

Children of Thomas Butler:

  1. Joshua Butler, b. abt. 1661/62 in Westmoreland Co., VA.;[9]; m. abt. 1703/04, Grace Page in VA. [23]; d. 1725 in King George Co., VA.[24] NOTE: Dorothy Baldridge does not refer to Joshua as her grandson in her will but as "the son of Thoms Butler" suggesting that Ann (Baldridge) Baynham Butler was not his mother.
  2. John Butler, b. abt. 1650, probably in Northumberland Co., VA.; m. Anne Baynham in Westmoreland Co., VA;[25] d. 1677 in Westmoreland Co., VA.[16]
  3. Thomas Butler, III, b. abt. 1652, probably in Northumberland Co., VA.; m. Anne Lancelot in Westmoreland Co., VA.[15]; d. 1714 in Westmoreland Co., VA.[26]

Thomas Butler appears to have died in Westmoreland County, Virginia sometime during the early part of 1678, as his then wife, Jane, was appointed Administratrix of his estate on 27 Feb 1677/78.[10] After Thomas passed away, his widow, Jane, married next to a man named John Berryman.[7] Mr. Berryman apparently died shortly after their marriage, as his will was submitted for probate before the Westmoreland County Court on 28 Jan 1679/80 by Jane, who was the Executrix of John Berryman’s estate.[27]

After Mr. John Berryman had passed away, Jane is known to have married again in about 1681 to a man named John Harvey.[7][28] John subsequently died in Stafford County, Virginia in 1701. His will, which had been written on 5 December 1700, was probated in Stafford County on 12 March 1700/01. His widow, Jane, was the Executrix of John Harvey’s estate also.[29] After John Harvey passed away, Jane married for a last time to a man named Francis Thornton in Stafford County, Virginia.[7][30]

Although Jane is known to have died in Virginia, the actual date and place of her death are not known. After Jane passed away, her last husband, Francis Thornton, married again to a woman named Anne. Francis Thornton died in 1726 in King George County, Virginia.[31]

Several of the children listed for Thomas Butler, II, namely one of the John's, Martha (Butler) Foxhall, Thomasine and Caleb seem to be associated more with his brother Christopher Butler. The Foxhall was closely aligned with the Elliott family in Westmoreland County, Virginia and Christopher assigned land to John Elliott, and John and Martha Foxhall's daughter, Mary, married Caleb Butler. Have never seen any of these children associated with Thomas II. Anyone have any ideas about this.

It could be what you say is true. There could be some sort of mix up here. I am not easily able to work on this profile - at least at the moment. I would give you the go ahead on this project. Thank you.
Are wives Jane and Ann the same woman? I don't see reference to him having married twice much less to two different Baldridge women.

Jane is said to be a relict of Butler, so I’m not sure how Ann would fit in, if ever. I’ll go back through some sources to figure it out.
Thomas Butler II was married secondly to Anne (Baldridge) Baynham, the widow of Alexander Baynham. There are several references that substantiate this. One is Virginia, Colonial Abstracts, 1632-1810. Volume I, Page 637, by Beverly Fleet. an entry states ”150 acres for Alexander Baynham for importing himself, Ann his wife, Alexander Baynham." (the last named being their son). When Thomas died, however, he was married to a woman named Jane (maiden name unknown), who married three more times after Thomas died.

J.E., could you help us out here with sources for Ann, widow of Alexander Baynham being later married to Thomas Butler? Many thanks.

Is there any source for Thomas' marriage to Ann Baldridge?
