Other IGI records state Benjamin, Russell, Delia and Adeline were born "of Somerset, Bristol, MA".

I do not believe the above birth years are "absolute", as the IGI file suggests, "exactly" two years between children? I suspect my estimations of the birth years of the children based on the 1820 and 1830 census are better approximations. Bud

1840 Census James and his family were enumerated in Cedar Lake, Lake County, Indiana.

Loren and Russell both came of age and left home between 1840-1850 settling in the fledging town of Berlin in Marquette (later Green Lake Co WI. Butler family tradition holds that sometime after 1840 James and Adeline, who by that time may have been the only child left at home, moved a few counties east to rejoin his brothers in Steuben Co IN. By 1850, when she was 20, Adeline was living with her sister, Adelia Parsons, in Dundee, IL.

Further proof that Seth might be the brother of James is the 1850 census for Berger Township, Genesee County, NY, page 57. Residing near each other are Benjamin (with son "Seth") and Samuel Butler

INSERT WITH THE BUTLERS AND BODLEYS OF STEUBEN COUNTY, wilson LOC 929-2 Wil History of the Benjamin Butler Family of North Hero, Vermont by Marvin B. Butler -- 1910

Our Uncle James Butler was a soldier of 1812 and his column reached Plattsburg just as the British flag went down. He married a Miss Weaver, sister of our Uncle Peter Weaver, and they had six children: Benjamin, Russell, James, Loren, Adelia, and Adaline. After the death of his wife, he remarried, and with his family moved west and located in Deep River, Ross Twp, Lake County, Indiana, about 1856. Benjamin, the oldest son, lived in Chicago several years and died there. Adelia' married a Mr, _____ of Lake County. Adeline was for several years in government, teaching in the Indian School in Minnesota. She and her school were captured by hostile Indians during the Civil War and expected brutal massacre, but before their captors could carry out their designs, they were recaptured by the U.S. Cavalry. She married one of her scholars, a half-breod Indian.

1836 moved to western IN following his son. Most of James’ siblings and children followed. They settled in Deep River Lake Co IN

With each move west the Butlers, like thousands of American families trod on the heels of the indigenous peoples who had inhabited the land . The Nishnabecs had been moved to Kansas just beofre the Butler’s arrived and these indians left behind cabins with brick chimneys, out buildings for stock, apple orchards, wagon roads, and hundreds of acres of fenced, cultivated fields.

My Lydia BUTLER Guynup, b a 1813, Beekmantown, Clinton County, New York, m. John Guynup, had large family in Saranac, Clinton County. Only Butler in 1820 and 30 censuses (and does have a female in household right age to be Lydia) is James Butler, b 1789-90. In 1837, he sold his land and with wife Polly disappeared. Not in 1840 census. Where did they go? Is he part of North Hero, Vermont Butler clan?

Can anyone recommend Butler genealogy that covers Vermont Butlers? (Have information from Edith Harmon book. Also have copy of small Butler genealogy pamphlet done by Marvin Butler in 1910. Covers family of Captain Benjamin Butler of North Hero (b 1759).

Linda Guynup Dewey San Francisco

There is in 1870 Census Salem Twp Steuben Co a Eliza Butler 68 b. VT living alone. wonder if she is 2nd wife of James.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Lydia (Butler) Guynap states that she was born in Delaware County New York in the 1855 State Census, she is likely not a part of this family, but rather of the John & Martha (Eels) Butler family (perhaps a grandaughter) who lived early in Delaware County, NY. His died 1837 and his very vague will was proved 1838 Walton, Delaware County, NY
