Biography

Name

This profile is part of the Butler Name Study.
: William, son of Nicholas Boteller. William is referred this way in the 1392 document, suggesting that he was of age by then, but that his father was still living.[1]
William Boteler of Yatton. William is called thus in 1399 court documents. From this we can infer that he was still residing in Yatton and that his father was probalby dead.[1]

1360 Birth

Property alienation record establishes that William was of legal age by 1392. Since he is referred to as son of his father Nicholas, it may be assumed his father was still alive in 1392.[1]
William was born then, around 1360, almost certainly in Yatton, Herfordshire, as his fathers had been before him.[1]

1385 Marriage

About 1385 William Boteler married Margaret, the daughter and heir of John Webbe and Elizabeth Froxmere of Droitwich.[1]

1392 Alienation of Property

On 19 September 1392 William Boteler of Yatton alienated property in Neubold upon Stoure.[1]

1401 Some Violence

William Boteler of Yatton and others are accused of coming to the town of Wyche, ringing the common bell of the town to summon their accomplices, and then breaking the close and houses plus the doors and cover of the well of salt water in the town, all belonging to Richard de Bello Campo, earl of Warwick, as well as breaking the leaden vessels for boiling the water gushing from the well and carrying off the vessels and other goods. So we have a 40 year old county commissioner and his father in law as well as other associated family members attacking the property of a powerful earl![1]

Career

He was not a military man and appears to have advanced in life through a career as a county commissio and through acqauisition of real estate. Like his father he held the title Esquire, and is referred to as such in later court records.[1]

Residence

Throughout his life, William was styled William Boteler of Yatton, so he apparently stayed there until his death, and was the last in his line to do so.[1]

1423 Death

The last known mention of this William occurs in 1423. In June of that year a Worcester draper pledged to repay the substantial sum of 40 pounds to William Boteler of Yatton.[1]
After his death, William's widow married Henry Hardesley.[1]

Issue

William Botiler of Droitwich. If William Boteler of Yatton was born about 1360, then his only known child, also called William, may have been born around 1390. Since William the elder lived in Yatton, we may assume William the younger was born there.[1]
