Biography

This profile is part of the Butler Name Study.

James was born in 1672. He is the son of James Butler and Mary Andrews. He passed away in 1736.

Resided on lands belonging to his father in Lancaster, Massachusetts. An extract taken from the History of Lancaster - 20 Apr 1704, "James Butler in garrison on ye ewast side of Nasaway river." His house was on the east side of Wetaquock Hills.

An instrument in Worcester, Mass., February 8, 1733: "James Butler, son of James, releases the children of her second husband (Hinds) from farther support of his mother during her natural life, and assumed the charge himself."

Probate

James Butler of Lancaster, husbandman died intestate and on 18 February 1736/37, his widow Hannah was granted the administration of her estate. His inventory was taken on 20 December 1735 in Lancaster.[1]

In 1738, an account of his estate by his widow Hannah was recorded which included cash received, debts paid, repairs to the barn, clothing for the children, provisions for the family, recording a deed, and administration fees.[2]

In 1739, his widow Hannah was asked to procure an artist to help in the division of his estate. The property was set out to his widow (her dower), and his sons, James Butler, Simon Butler, Isaac Butler, Nathan Butler, and Jonathan Beman.[3]

I worked with the professional hired by the NEGHS and he felt that James Butler, the Irishman was the great grandfather of Asaph Butler. Thus the parents of Butler-6484 (which I have dna ties to) do not seem to be Butler-628 and Lydia Snow Snow-2593 . If they were married in 1698, then they did not have the James Bidwell Butler b. 1672 Butler-6484 (Wiki shows as James III.) Thus the father of Butler-6484 is Butler-654.
