Biography

Thomas was the son of Sir Edmund Butler, 2nd Baronet Cloughgrenan and Juliana Hyde.

Succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Butler, of Cloughgrenan, co. Carlow [I., 1628] before 1653.

He married 1) Jane Boyle, daughter of Rt. Rev. Richard Boyle and Abigail Worth. [1]

Children included:

  1. Pierce 4th Bt. d. c 1732
  2. James d. bt 1720 - 1723

He married 2) Jane Pottinger, daughter of Captain Edward Pottinger, in July 1700.

He held the office of Sheriff of County Carlow in 1670. He held the office of Sheriff of County Carlow in 1691.

He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Carlow [Ireland] between 1692 and 1699.

He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Carlow [Ireland] in 1703.

He died between January 1703 and February 1703. He died intestate and his estate was administered to his brother, James on 21 July 1705.

Might this be his tombstone? http://ngb.chebucto.org/Cemetery/butler-thomas-butler-plot-port-de-grave-pdg.shtml leaving "many decendants". Did his two sons listed above move to Port de Grave, Newfoundland or are there perhaps many other of his children who settled in this area of Newfoundland?
