Research
Samuel's parents are NOT James Butler and Mary Forbis Butler of Barren County, Kentucky, despite the attribution by many researchers over the years.
In 1850, James and Mary "Polly" Butler are found on the census in Barren County with one of their sons, Harmon, and Finley Forbis (possibly a nephew).[15] James Butler also identifies his wife as Mary Butler formerly Forbis in his will.
However, also in 1850 Samuel Butler is on the census in Livingston County, Missouri with his wife Alcinda, several of their children and with Polly Butler, age 54, b. Kentucky, and Britannia Butler, age 16, b. Illinois. Also listed are Alcinda's brother John Clyman, age 14 and a James M. Mannon, age 21, b. Arkansas, and no occupation.[12] In 1853 and 1856, there are also land transactions between Mary Butler and Samuel & Alcinda Butler. This is likely the Mary "Polly" Butler that is Samuel's mother. But it is definitely not Mary "Polly" Forbis Butler, who is living elsewhere with her husband.
If Britannia is Samuel's sister, it suggests the entire family had moved from Kentucky by the 1836 when she was born in Illinois. But James and Mary Forbis Butler are also in Barren County, Kentucky in the 1840 census.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
