Biography

This person is an ancestor of President Millard Fillmore[1]

Born about 1639 at Hartford Samuel is the second son of Deacon Richard Butler and the first child of Richard's second wife, Elizabeth Bigelow. He settled in nearby Wethersfield marrying Elizabeth Olmstead by 1664. In 1668 he was appointed as Town School Master and was a Deacon prior to 1689 when he was a Selectman. Samuel died on December 31, 1692. [2]

Conflicting information:

"Samuel married Mary Olmstead, sister of the Joseph Olmstead Who married Samuel's sister Elizabeth. Mary, a daughter of Captain Nicholas and Sarah Loomis Olmstead, was born Nov. 20, 1646, and died Oct. 12, 1681. As elsewhere we find it stated that she died at the age of 34 years, 10 months and two days, there is a slight discrepancy in these dates. Captain Olmstead lived in Hartford and served in the Pequot War in 1637, and in King Phillip's War in 1675. He died in 1684. His wife was a daughter of Joseph Loomis. Samuel Butler died after Dec. 30/31, 1692, at Wethersfield. He and his wife Mary had moved to Wethersfield on Oct. 12, 1665, where he was made a freeman; in 1668 he was chosen schoolmaster there, and that same year, May 14th, served as deputy to the General Court. Then there is a lapse of twenty years in the record of his activities, until May 12, 1687, when he again was elected deputy to the General Court, which he also served in Sept. 1689 and May 1692. In Oct. 1687 "Deacon Samuel Butler was appointed by the General Court of which he was a member, to settle the' bounds of certain lands which had been granted to John Kilborn and others. which service a former committee had failed to perform." In 1688 Wethersfield obeyed the "Usurper's" laws, and commissioners for the collection of internal revenue were appointed by the Andros government of Boston, Samuel Butler being chosen commissioner for his town."[3]

In his will Samuel Butler mentions eight children. The two pages of inventory summed up to 429 pounds.

Samuel's sister Elizabeth married his wife's brother Joseph

He is buried at Wethersfield Village Cem, Wethersfield, Hartford, CT. [This statement was added to the biography by unknown person without documentation. See comment by Andrew Simpler below. WWS]

Butler-20591 and Butler-1378 appear to represent the same person because: This is same person -- differences need adjustment.

See comments on 1378 about his burial place, etc.

Butler-7679 and Butler-1378 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife (two entries pending merge because of different spelling--Olmsted vs. Olmstead).
