John was born in 1744 at Brandford, Connecticut, the son of Jonathan Butler and Temperance Buckingham.
John died before 1 May 1810 probably near Durham, New York -- on that day John's son John wrote his will and described his mother Elizabeth as a widow.[1]
John married Elizabeth Linsley. After most or all of their children were born at Branford, they removed to Durham, New York.[2]
Veteran of the War of Independence. Served as a Private in 5th Battalion Wadsworth's Brigade, Continental Army, recruited at Branford, Connecticut, June 1776 - term expired 25 DEC 1776. Saw action in Battle of Long Island, 27 AUG 1776, retreat from New York, 29-30 AUG - 15 SEP 1776, and at the Battle of White Plains 28 OCT 1776.
John Butler Junr of Branford sold to Sarah Linsley, wife of Ebenr Linsley of Branford, one acre with a dwelling house on 24 April 1787.[3]
