Stephen Butler was born about the 3rd of February 1802 and was christened on the 31st of August 1802 at Hambledon in Hampshire [1]. He was the second son of Thomas Butler and Hester Lushington[2].
He was educated at Worcester College, matriculating on the 19th of May 1830, aged 18 and graduating B.A. in 1824.
Stephen was the curate of Soberton in Hampshire, from 1826 until 1848.
He married Mary Ann Thistlethwayte (the third daughter of Thomas Thistlethwayte and his wife, Mary Anne Guitton) on the 15th of April 1828 at Southwick in Hampshire, by Licence [3]. The witnesses were Hester Butler and Katharine Thistlethwayte. [4] They had five children.
Mary Ann died on the 21st of May 1838, and was buried at Soberton on the 26th. [5]
In the 1851 England Census, Stephen Butler (aged 49 and Incumbent of Trinity Church, Southampton) was recorded living with his daughters Mary M Butler (21), Hester C Butler (19), Catherine J Butler (18), Agnes E Butler (7) and stepdaughter Caroline Palmer (24) at "Town", Hambledon, Hampshire. Also in the household were a visitor and three servants.
Stephen died at Guildford in Surrey on the 5th of November 1855 and was buried on the 10th November at St Peter Churchyard in Soberton. [7][8][9][10]
