Biography

Julia Ann Butler was born in 1812 in Fleming, Kentucky. She would marry Aaron Spurgeon on October 16, 1831, in Putnam County, Indiana. They would have at least six children as follows:

Greenbury Jackson Spurgeon (1833–1874)

George Washington Spurgin (1834–1915)

Nancy Jane Spurgeon Perryman (1836–1920)

Elias Tilford Spurgeon (1839–1906)

Maranda Mary Spurgeon (1840- )

Evaline (Evalina) Spurgin (1845- )

Like many families that lived in what were known as the "border states" during the Civil War, Julia's family was split between their North or South affections. Evidently her husband Aaron and their older sons sided with the South while Julia and their youngest son, Elias, sided with the North. Researchers have found no record of a divorce but Aaron left Julia at some point during the lead up to the war or during the war itself. In the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census, Julia is living with Elias and his family. When Elias' wife died in 1883, Julia would help raise her son's family.

Julia passed away in 1898 at 85 years of age. Her body is buried in the Friendship Cemetery in Mountain Grove, Wright County, Missouri, along with many Spurgeon relatives.
