John Byng, 1st Earl of Strafford was born in 1772. He was the son of George Byng and Anne Conolly. He m.(1) Mary Stevens Mackenzie on 14 June 1804 and (2) Marianne James, daughter of Sir Walter James, 1st Bt. and Lady Jane Pratt, on 9 May 1809.
John Byng was an army officer, promoted to Major-General in 1813 and at the end of the war was made KCB, later promoted lieutenant-general in 1825. He then became a politician, MP for Poole in 1831. He was created Baron Strafford of Harmondsworth on 12 May 1835, and earl of Strafford and Viscount Enfield on 18 September 1847.
He continued his Army career, promoted general 15 Aug 1850 and field marshal 2 October 1855. On 3 June 1860 he died at his residence, 44 Grosvenor Square, London
