Biography

Augustin was born in 1762. Augustin Cadotte ... passed away prior to Aug 1838 as his wife Angelique remarried Aug 23, 1838.

One of many Cadottes found to be involved in the fur trade or the War of 1812. 1803 Augustin Cadotte (1762-183?) is a clerk in the N.W.C. on the low Red River. In September 1803, Augustin Cadotte, Antony Payet and five men built a fort at Pinancewaywining Post to trade with the Cree and Stone Indians (where he also lived) By 1821, Augustin was working as an interpreter for the American Fur Company, beginning at the Lac du Flambeau outfit.

Baker provides information that a mitochondrial haplogroup DNA test for a descendent of Augustin’s wife, Angeline, which indicates that she is in the H haplogroup, a European and not Native American finding. It is unlikely that her father was native and her mother French, therefore, she was mostly likely French. Her surname appears as Dumarse on the 19 Aug. 1829 baptism of her daughter Herenie (Harriet) in Galena, Illinois. Dumarse is not a surname found among French-Canadians and might be a corruption of Demers, Desmarais, or another surname. Angeline would be Augustin’s second wife.

He had at least one daughter, Suzanne married to Joseph Beaupre at Red River in 1825, and her mother was an Ojibwa. Based on evidence in the Ransom Judd Powell papers, Baker believes that this woman was Quaydowwe from Leech Lake near Red Lake, Minnesota.

Corrections to the profile as I see it today, 5 June 2021:

1. This Augustin Cadot did not marry Ester Dandurand -- that was a different man.

2. This Augustin did marry a Sauteuse of Leech Lake, but she was not "Angelique" -- Angelique "Dumarse" was a later wife who was married to him from 1825 (maybe earlier) through at least 1832. His first wife was "Quay dow we", if Ransom Judd Powell's White Earth genealogy tree #13 is to be trusted: looking below, one finds Joseph Beaupre married to Quay dow wee's daughter, and the children match those found for the couple in the U.S. censuses.

3. Augustin's wife Angelique "Dumarse" (surname as written on the baptism of her daughter Herenie, a photo of which appears on this site) is not of native American descent (at least not on her maternal line), as has now been established by two separate mitochondrial DNA tests from two of her direct female-line descendants. This information has just recently been conveyed to Denis Beauregard and the French Heritage DNA Project and is being processed at the moment. BTW, thanks go to John Dulong for pointing me to the baptism record of Herenie Cadotte on Ancestry,com.

4. Augustin had a daughter born about 1803 MAY 12, on the Riviere aux Islets de Bois, NW of Pembina, as recorded in the diary of Alexander Henry the Younger. This may be the Suzanne who married at St Boniface in 1825 to Joseph Beaupre, or it may be some other daughter.

5. The name "Hubert" assigned to Augustin's oldest son is not correct, I think (a son of Ester Dandurand Cadotte?) -- as far as I know, if Augustin and Angelique did indeed have a son older than their daughter Angeline, his first name is not known.

6. I wrote the text you have included here in the two paragraphs beginning with "I am assuming that the father of the four Cadotte girls found in the Galena/Potosi area in the 1840's (Angelina, Delilah, Harriett, and Nancy) were daughters of the "Augustus Cado" found in the 1830 census in Galena.". I wrote that probably five or ten years ago, before obtaining the DNA test information mentioned above. I am currently looking into the possibility that Angelique "Dumarse" came out to Red River in 1818 with the first priests, with one of the few French Canadian families who came out then or in the following few years.

7. I have written up a paper outlining the reason for constructing this family as it is laid out (more or less) above, with these five daughters being assigned as children of Augustin and Angelique. If anyone would like a pdf, please e-mail me.

8. There are some land deeds in Galena in the 1830s and 1840s that confirm that the Angelique who married Louis Kirky in 1838 was previously named "Cadotte" -- the individual lots can be tracked showing this.
