John Cain /Cane/Kane was born and raised in Pennsylvania, USA. He moved to Texas to the wide open spaces where he could apply for a land grant. He found Gonzales Colony, applied for the grant and was working the land. John bought or was granted lots in the inner section of Gonzales.

John heard of the Mexican Government imposing restrictions on colonists. He joined the Gonzales Ranging Company relief force. He also joined the Texas army obtaining a position of artilleryman with Capt. Carey's artillery company as Private. [1]

Fall, 1835 he fought in the Siege of Bexar. [2][3]About that time he received approval for his land grant of 640 acres in Gonzales Colony. <rename=gonzales /> A thorough man, John also attended in 1835 and voted for the delegates to send to the drafting of the Texas Independence in San Felipe.

Although John Cain had been serving at the garrison of the Alamo, he was off duty at home, in the town of Gonzales, when news came from Col. Travis that the Alamo was surrounded, asking for Gonzales' Rangers help. <rename=gonzales /> Thus John Cain returned with the Gonzales Rangers <rename=gonzales />
[4] to be at his post in Capt. Carey's company in the Alamo.

John Cain was killed in the battle of the Alamo at the age of 34. A memorial is in San Fernando Cathedral.[5] Note: The Republic of Texas awarded 1/3 league land bounty to John Cain Heirs and 640 acres for his service in the Siege of Bexar. [6]
