Cautionary Note: There is no proof that Peter Cain is the father of Michael Cain. Peter and his wife Martha were living in Albemarle Parish, Surry, Virginia at the time of Michael's birth in 1761 as they had a daughter at that time. The children of Peter and Martha were: 9 Aug 1759 Anne Cain 24 Sep 1761 Clairborne Cain 30 Mar 1766 Martha Cain 7 Jan 1769 Mary Cain 4 Nov 1771 Matt Hill Cain The insertion of Michael Cain and Patrick Cain into this famly by others appears to be wishful thinking.

This Michael was born in Ireland, allegedly in Dublin. There are three "alleged" brothers: Michael, Matthew Cain (who is a son of Peter and Martha Hil) and Patrick Cain. Patrick was also born in Ireland. Patrick’s county of birth was not recorded, but Y-DNA tests on three of Patrick’s descendants match Cains from Co Galway on the west coast.

Michael was allegedly born in Dublin, on the east coast . The documents alleged to make Patrick, Michael and Matthew to be brothers, and allegedly held at the Nelson County Courthouse, have never been produced by anyone.

I do not believe the lore that Michael Cain died 22 Oct 1856 in Meade County, KY. There is no information that can be found on him after the 1830 census. The death date most likely belongs to his son Michael Cain b. 1816 in the 1850 census (single) and in Meade County, KY.

Military

One of the oldest stories was that of Michael Cain (from Ireland) a drum major in the American Army at the Battle of New Orleans (War of 1812). Tradition indicated that during the battle he said, "Men are not killed with drums", and with that, he took a gun, fought, and was wounded in the head. He was carried off the field by General Andrew Jackson on the General's horse. Michael was age 53 in this battle during 1814. General Jackson's victory in this battle would provide him the popularity to win his future presidency. Michael served under General Jackson as part of the KY Volunteer Militia (long rifle sharpshooters). He was to be known later as a weaver of fine linen and other fabrics in the Doe Run Mills. His son, John C. Cain, was a Fife Major in the Mexican War. [1]

Notes

Message posted Jan 2000 by Linda Eades on the www.genealogy.com site: From records of spencer and Nelson county Cemeteries vol 11 by Bettie Curie I have Michael died 1022/1856 at age 95 in Meade Co Ky. From Nelson county marriages I have Michael married Elizabeth Warman 10/121796 in Nelson co Ky. Margaret Warman listed as mother on marriage record. Have Michael came to America in 1786 with brothers Matthew and Patrick. [Sic. Patrick was a 15 year old runaway Irish indentured labourer in Philadelphia in 1775, and married there in 1781.] I have no other information at this time.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Michael by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Michael:
