1860 census, WiIliam lived in Lafayette County, Mississippi. gives WH Caine, age 60 with land valued at $6000. He is living with his second wife, Annette, age 38 and children: Cornelius, Salita, Indiana, and Louisiana. [2]
In 1870, WH Cain is living next door to his son Cornelius and family. The value of his land and personal estate has decreased to about $500 each.[3]

Note: From Terri Harmon Dean: "William Hardin Cain was an early settler of Panola County and lived in the community of Pleasant Mount which is in the area of New Hope church community. He was the manager of Harmon land and died of cancer. He was one of the few people in the county who could read or write." (email to Pat Iverson from August, 2006)
