Biography

Mrs. Phoebe Osborn, widow of the late Lyman Osborn, who was a prominent and wealthy farmer of McWilliams Precinct, resided in Talmage, where she was surrounded by all the comforts of many luxuries of life. She was the owner of a large extent of land in McWilliams, besides land owned in Nemaha and Saline Counties, along with Scott County, Iowa. She is a lady of more than ordinary business capacity, managing her farms and controlling her property in a skillful and profitable manner. She had come to this state in December 9, 1869, all the time in Otoe County and most of the time in Nebraska City. She came her from Scott County, Iowa with her husband and they settled on a farm in McWilliams Precinct, where Mr. Osborn died six months later on the 13th of August, 1870. A native of Seneca Co., N.Y., Mr. Osborn was born on June 19, 1812, and was reared to manhood on the family farm. He married Phoebe on April 3, 1851. Miss Phoebe Calder of Meigs County was born in Washington Co., Ohio December 29, 1828, and was the eldest child of John and Elsa Rathburn Calder, who were natives of New York. Mrs. Phoebe Osborn was reared and educated in Ohio, and engaged in some teaching from time to time before her marriage. She and her husband soon took up their residence in Scott County, Iowa, where they became the parents of two sons. The elder, Lyman Jr., and the younger John. Mrs. Osborn like her parents was connected with the Christian Church. She had lots of time for reading and recreation and social intercourse with the many friends whom she had gathered around her during the yeas of a well spent life.
